Ciampa became part of the NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament on September 2, 2015, although he was not re-signed by WWE. On September 9, he and new partner Johnny Gargano advanced to the second round of the tournament. Ciampa lost a singles fight to Breeze on the September 30 program. On the December 2 episode of NXT, he won against Samoa Joe.

On the January 13, 2016 edition of NXT, Ciampa defeated Danny Burch and on the February 24 show he defeated Bull Dempsey. Ciampa won tapings again on March 15, this time against Jesse Sorensen.

Ciampa returned to NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia on January 27, 2018, attacking Gargano with a crutch to end the show. On the February 21 episode of NXT, he cost Gargano his fight for the NXT Championship against Andrade “Cien” Almas, resulting in Gargano leaving the company per the pre-match clause. Ciampa returned to the ring in the NXT TakeOver: New Orleans main event, but Gargano lost in an unofficial match, culminating in Gargano’s reinstatement to NXT. Ciampa won the vacant NXT Championship on September 14 after defeating LA Knight, Pete Dunne and Von Wagner in a fatal four-way match.
