Early life

on July 13, 1963 Anthony Jerome Webb aka Spud Webb was born in Dallas, Texas. so is he 58 years old. He was born to his father David Webb and mother Katie Webb. So he came from a poor family that struggled to make ends meet. He also has 5 siblings whose names are not yet known.

And the whole family of 8 lived in a small 2 bedroom house in Dallas. To solve his family’s problem, he started playing basketball and loved it. In 7th grade, he tried to get on the school’s basketball team. But he was turned down to play and was told he was too small to play. He later improved his skills and entered Wilmer-Hutchins High School. At school he faced the same problem.

Career

Despite his good performance, Spud found it difficult to find a college that was interested in him. So, once again, the reason was his height. However, he did become part of Midland College’s basketball team, the “Chaparrals”. In 1982, he led his team to the junior college national title. In the game against Miami-Dade, he delivered the best of his career with 36 points.

His performance in the tournament gave him the biggest breakthrough he had been waiting for. And Sports Illustrated wrote an article about him and it became a national headline. He was named an NJCAA All American by the National Junior College Athletic Association in 1983.

He was later noticed by North Carolina State University assistant coach Tom Abatemarco. Through him he was introduced to Jim Valvano. Jim is the head coach of the varsity basketball team. Luckily, Jim saw his potential and offered him a scholarship to the university. In the “NBA draft” in 1985, his selection was not likely, as many scouts assumed. Against all odds, he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the 1985 NBA draft.

However, he made his debut with the Atlanta Hawks beginning in the 1985–1986 season. As such, his performance in his early years at Atlanta was neither too bad nor too good. In the 79 games of his 1st season, he averaged 7.8 points per game. As he progressed, he struggled to perform as his average PPG dropped to 6.8 and 6.0 respectively over the next 2 years. The 1988–1989 season was poor as he only averaged 3.9 points per game.

He later made a strong comeback, averaging 9.2 and 13.4 points respectively. In 1991 he was released from the Hawks. He was also picked up by the Sacramento Kings that same year. His confidence began to post and played for the Kings over the next three seasons. Over the seasons, he averaged 14.5, 12.7, and 11.6 points per game, respectively.

Similarly, he joined the ‘Atlanta Hawks in 1995 with underperforming. After the 1998 season, he retired from the game. Finally, in 1986, he entered the ‘NBA Slam Dunk Contest. This made him the shortest player in history to enter the competition. In addition, his participation surprised the local media houses. Hopefully he made waves after winning the competition against much bigger players. Spud Webb’s net worth is $10 million.
