Murder of her sister Yetunde Price

Serena’s older half-sister Yetunde was Venus and Serena’s personal assistant. Sadly, the athlete siblings lost their sister to murder on September 14, 2003 in a shooting in Compton, California. Robert Edward Maxfield was sentenced to 15 years in prison by Judge Steven Suzukawa on April 6, 2006.

However, he was paroled on March 8, 2018 after serving a reduced sentence of 12 years for his good behavior at the Deuel Vocational Institution prison in Tracy, California. Serena found out about the perpetrator’s release via Instagram on July 31, just 10 minutes before her match against Johanna Konta.
