Early life

Furthermore, on September 22, 1980, after Saddam Hussein launched an invasion of Iran, Saddam Hussein triggered the Iran–Iraq War (1980–1988). Soleimani joined the battlefield and served as a military company leader. The military company consisted of men from Kerman whom he assembled and trained.

He quickly earned a reputation for bravery. The young Army personnel rose through their roles in successful operations to retake territory occupied by Iraq. He eventually became commander of the 41st Tharallah Division while still in his 20s. After the war he was IRGC commander in Kerman province in the 1990s. During the 1999 student revolt in Tehran, Soleimani was one of the IRGC officers who signed a letter to President Mohammad Khatami. Furthermore, the letter had stated that if Khatami did not put down the student rebellion, the military would do it. Likewise, the letter also mentioned that it could also launch a coup against Khatami.

In addition, in 2008 he led a group of Iranian investigators investigating the death of Imad Mughniyah.
