They hung a black curtain in the living room and cut a hole in it. His grandmother hid on the other side and handed him cards through the curtain. His grandfather watched him play along, “Grandma must have gone outside for a minute,” and he had no idea what the cards were like.

In 2003, when he was only 15, he was invited to perform on stage at a show hosted by the Society of American Magicians called “Stars of Tomorrow” at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. For the next four years after his college performance, Mat Franco toured the country performing for colleges and universities. This helped him to be recognized more quickly as an in-demand act.

He performed a card trick in which he told a story about his magical career and that America’s Got Talent Judges as they pull out cards that match the story. He also created the illusion of turning cards into images of the judges. The judges for America’s Got Talent During this season were Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel.

With four yeses from all the judges during the audition, he proceeded to Judgment Week. He was placed in the Mage category this week. During his appearance in Episode 907, he asked Mel B to pick a random card and place cards on a table so their backs created an image of Howie Mandel holding Mel B’s selected card. His performance was strong enough, which is why he advanced to the Quarterfinals in Episode 908.

Also, his appearance was in the week two quarterfinals of Episode 911. He spray-painted a playing card image on the back of a wall and asked Heidi Klum to pick a random card from a deck. He then unveiled the painted wall to represent a different card than the one Heidi had chosen.

He cut into a seat cushion with “642” written on it, revealing the phone ringing in the seat cushion.

Afterwards, he revealed that the phone contained the photo taken earlier in the performance. For this performance, he received a standing ovation from judges Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel. After this round he went through Top 12 and Final 6. With equally outstanding magic performances he finally reached the final.

For the finale in Episode 924, he performed an illusion. In this performance, he transferred three playing cards from Rosie O’Donnell’s body to Howard Stern’s body without touching them. With this performance he took first place in the competition. They unveiled the result ahead of Emily West, AcroArmy, Sons of Serendip, Quintavious Johnson and Miguel Dakota. He was the first to win a million dollars and a headline show in Las Vegas.
