After graduating from Centerville High School, he spent his senior years playing quarterback for the Ohio State University football team. After John Cooper was confirmed as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1988, he was the first player ever to commit to the team.
And over the next 5 years, he established himself as one of the big names on the team, becoming a four-time letter winner. During his tenure, Kirk played alongside Greg Frey and Kent Graham and continued to captain the team in 1992. He was also voted MVP for the 1992 season.
He and his father Jim became only the second father-son duo to represent Ohio State as captains, since his father had represented the 1960 Ohio State team along with Jim Tyrer as co-captain. Kirk also held the record for most passes ever made by a player for Ohio State before being broken by Troy Smith in 2006.
After ending his playing career, he became a commentator. Along with Desmond Howard, Rece Davis and Lee Corso, he joined the ESPN College GameDay expert panel, discussing and analyzing college football games, highlights and player profiles.
He then joined ABC Sports’ college football primetime series as an analyst alongside Chris Fowler. For this he was nominated for a Sports Emmy Award in 1997 as television’s top studio analyst.
He later worked as a color commentator for ESPN on Thursday night games. He eventually began commentating on Saturday night college football games on ABC and became the host of 97.1 The Fan’s weekly college football radio show in Columbus.
On March 23, 2022, he was announced as the new color commentator for Thursday Night Football on Prime Video. And on the same day, Kirk agreed to extend his contract with ESPN to continue on GameDay, Saturday Night Football and the NFL Draft to fulfill his new NFL duties for Amazon.
Kirk met his wife Alison Butler at Ohio State, where she was a cheerleader. The two married on June 13, 1998. Together they have four sons. The couple had identical twin sons, Jake and Tye, born in 2000, and later two other sons, Zak and Chase, who were born in 2003 and 2006, respectively. The family relocated to Nashville from Ohio in 2011, but now split their time between there and Cincinnati.
