Olbermann founded ESPN’s SportsCenter in 1992 and stayed there until 1997, except for a brief stint with ESPN2 in 1993-1994. To help launch ESPN2, he became the network’s “marquee” personality. He and Dan Patrick regularly hosted SportsCenter’s 11:00 p.m. show, and the two became a popular hosting duo. Olbermann was named Best Sports Reporter by Cable ACE in 1995.

He then co-authored The Big Show, with Patrick, about their experiences working at the SportsCenter. Between 1997 and 2007, Olbermann published an essay entitled “Mea Culpa” on Salon in November 2002, in which he stated, “I couldn’t handle the pressures of working on daily long-form television, and what was worse, I did. I don’t know that I couldn’t handle it.”

In 1999, Olbermann joined Fox Sports Net as the anchor of the ill-fated daily sports news program National Sports Report. After leaving Fox Sports in 2001, Olbermann began providing twice-daily sports commentary on ABC Radio Network, recreating Howard Cosell’s “Speaking of Sports” and “Speaking of Everything” segments.
