Bobby Beathard is a former National Football League (NFL) general manager. Bobby Beathard’s teams won four Super Bowls during his 38-year NFL career, beginning with the 1966 Kansas City Chiefs, the 1972 and 1973 Miami Dolphins, the 1982, 1983 and 1987 Washington Redskins, and the 1994 San Diego Chargers.

Bobby Beathard was not drafted in 1959 and played for two professional clubs in the preseason. He began his professional football career in 1963 as a part-time scout for the Kansas City Chiefs and then briefly left the Chiefs to scout for the American Football League. He also earned his first AFL championship ring as a member of the 1966 Chiefs. From 1968 to 1971 Beathard worked as a scout for the Atlanta Falcons.

The Washington Redskins hired Beathard as their general manager in 1978. Beathard, Russ Grimm, Joe Gibbs and Art Monk led the Redskins to three Super Bowl appearances and two championships during his time in Washington. Additionally, the Redskins’ 1991 championship roster consisted largely of players Beathard had recruited for the team.
Beathard joined the Chargers as general manager after a year as a studio analyst for NBC. In its third season in San Diego, the team secured its premiership title and made its Super Bowl debut five years later. In 2000, Beathard announced his retirement.
