Anthony is primarily a performer in musical theater. He is best known in the UK in the 1980s for his role in the Gold Blend TV commercial for Nescafé. It led to starring roles in many television series. The first role of this actor was in the musical Godspell.

He is also known for his roles as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Prime Minister in Little Britain and Uther Pendragon in Merlin, as well as narrating Herc Shipwright in BBC Radio 4’s Cabin Pressure. In 2002 he starred in the BBC Two television series Manchild.
